Too busy to workout? Here’s how to fit exercise in to any schedule

“I really want to drop a dress size but what with work, the kids and hubbie demanding his meal on the table, I just don’t have time”


“I really want to tone up and feel fit but I can’t afford the gym membership”


“I was going to workout after work, but I was called into a last minute meeting”

That’s too many but’s for our liking, and not of the good kind!

You know what though? Fitting exercise into your daily routine isn’t as hard as it may seem. You just need to be a little inventive.

So today we’re giving you five ideas to help you stop making up excuses and start looking good – you’ll thank us for it in the end.

1. Exercise to and from work

You have to go to work anyway, so why not turn it in to an opportunity to workout? If you live within a few miles of work, ditch the car and run, cycle, rollerblade or power walk instead.

Not only will this give you the daily exercise you need to lose weight, tone up and stay fit, it’ll clear your head and help you be more productive during the day.

You’ll actually wonder why you didn’t start doing it sooner!

If you live further away from the office, get off the train or bus a few stops earlier. If that’s not possible either, try taking a different route from the train station or bus stop. Use a fitness app to track distance and calories – once you see it works, you’ll start challenging yourself in distance, speed or calories.

2. The kids workout

Make the most of having kids around to do things you wouldn’t normally do. Like playing frisbee or throwing ball in the park. Going rollerblading, ice skating, playing football, tennis or heading to the local adventure park.

Don’t sit on the side lines and watch. Get involved.

The kids will love it, your body will love it, and your inner child will absolutely LOVE it.

3. Stair running

Stop walking up stairs (any stairs) at a snail’s pace, dragging each leg up behind the other until you’ve made it. A little like conquering Everest.

Instead look at them as a challenge. How fast can you get up them? Can you be faster?

Think Rocky. Heck why not listen to Eye of the Tiger at the same time if it’ll incentivise you to go faster!

You’ve got to go up them anyway, so why not make it into a workout session?

4. The watching TV workout

Okay so you haven’t got time to exercise, but you’ve got time to sit down in front of the box to watch your favourite programme, huh?

Well we’ve got a solution for that too.

Workout and watch TV at the same time.

Think squats, sit ups, push ups, lunges, jumping jacks, anything really.

No excuses …  now get to it!

5. Earlybird workout

If you really haven’t got enough hours in your day, add some new ones in.

Set your alarm for half an hour earlier and do your workout before work. Exercising first thing in the morning is proven to kick start your metabolism and clear your head ready for the day ahead.

Not got 30 minutes or need your beauty sleep? Try a Tabata style workout that pushes you to the max for just 4 minutes.

See, whatever your schedule, there’s always time for a workout.
