Are you an early bird or night owl exerciser?

Don’t worry! Recent research carried out by The National Sleep Foundation has found that exercising just before going to bed doesn’t have any negative effects on your sleep, and in some cases it can actually lead to a better night sleep.

Separate research by the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has shown that over 80% of vigorous exercisers reported very or fairly good sleep quality versus only 56% of non-exercisers.

However there are of course people who may not benefit from late night workouts. Timothy Morgenthaler, M.D., writing for, explains: “you can determine the time of day that is best for you to work out by rating your quality of sleep. First, work out close to bedtime for two weeks and rate your quality of sleep each night on a scale of 1-10. Then exercise regularly every morning for the next two weeks and rate your quality of sleep the same. Add up the ratings for each week and divide it by the total number of days that were rated to get your average score for sleep quality.”

So take his advice and test yourself to find out whether you’re an early bird or night owl when it comes to exercise.
